2 billion hryvnias are foreseen in budget to improve road safety in 2018. Volodymyr Omelyan stated the above during the meeting of Interagency Working Group on the reforming of State Road Safety System. Volodymyr Omelyan, the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine and Igor Didenko, an Ukrainian MP are chaired the Interagency working group. Representatives of central executive authorities, members of the Reform Support Team Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine were also attended the meeting.

The Minister of Infrastructure stressed that road traffic death and injury on Ukrainian roads are very high and task of all branches of government and society is to reduce road traffic death rate at least twice by 2020.

"First time we are developing a National Road Safety Program. 5% of the Road Fund will be allocated for these purposes, this is UAH 1.5 billion ", - Volodymyr Omelyan said.

"Also we have 400 million hryvnias of EU sectoral support to equip places of large concentration of traffic accidents across the country. In total, about 2 billion hryvnias will be allocated on road safety in 2018.  Together with the Ministry of Interior of Ukraine, national police and other authorities, we have worked out places of large concentration of traffic accidents. These are five regions. Now, we are worked out measures to reduce the accident rate in these areas, and I would like these 400 million hryvnias of EU sectoral support will be realizing in coordination with our working group.  This is a joint financing of road safety ", - the head of the Ministry said.

Key measures will include:

  • Finance implementation of automatic fixing systems of violations of traffic rules.
  • Road safety infrastructure.
  • Information campaigns on road safety.
  • Development technical recommendations for safe engineering of road infrastructure.
  • Professional training of specialists in the sphere of traffic safety.

Oleksandr Klitina, head of the Reform Support Team emphasized that the Program is at the final stage: "We are finalizing the final approvals. By joint efforts of the working group, Government, Parliament and society, we should to do everything to make the Program start to work from January 1, 2018".
