Volodymyr Omelyan made a working visit to Brussels

On October 26, 2017, Volodymyr Omelyan, the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine, made a working visit to Brussels. During the visit, the Minister took part in a joint meeting with representatives of the European Commission and the European Aviation Safety Agency on the assessment of potential risks and threats of aviation in the Dnipropetrovsk Flight Information Region (FIR). During the meeting, the EU structures and the relevant state bodies of Ukraine launched an open dialogue in the field of aviation safety.

The Minister of Infrastructure held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Henrik Hololei, the EU Commissioner for Mobility and Transport. The parties have agreed to start preparations for the Ukrainian-European transport dialogue, which should be held in February 2018. During the meeting, there were discussed key objectives of the National Transport Strategy of Ukraine; development of Ukrainian-European cooperation in railway, aviation and road sectors; implementation of European experience in improving road safety; development of digital infrastructure, including strengthening of the cyber security of the transport sector.

Mr. Henrik Hololei expressed his support to the reforms being implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure, and emphasized the crucial importance of adopting infrastructure legislation aimed at European integration. The parties agreed to join efforts to accelerate process of transposing the European legislation into national legislation.

Volodymyr Omelyan also met with Mr. Christian Danielsson, the Director General for Neighborhood and Enlargement at the European Commission (DG NEAR).

The parties agreed to expand cooperation between Ukraine and the EU in particular, on the preparation of pre-feasibility-study of those infrastructure objects that are potentially interesting to foreign investors. "We are planning to carry out this work in November and coordinate this projects with international financial institutions and donors, so that investors would have a complete framework for assessing investment opportunities," - Volodymyr Omelyan emphasized.

Mr. Christian Danielsson invited Volodymyr Omelyan to participate in the "Eastern Partnership" Summit, which will be held on November 24, 2017 in Brussels.

During the meeting, the parties also discussed the internal political situation in Ukraine.

Separately, the Minister of Infrastructure presented Ukraine's vision of expanding transport network with the countries of the European Union, in particular, the initiative for the construction of GO Highway and Via Carpatia; and development of border infrastructure.

"I believe that GO Highway and Via Carpatia will be the first projects which will involve introduction of digital infrastructure, wi-fi network, automatic weighing control systems, etc. Connection with Europe should be not only high-speed and safe, but also modern and high-tech," Volodymyr Omelyan stressed.

Also, the Minister informed about the plans for construction of the Lviv-Budapest, Lviv-Dubno and Lviv-Chop Highways.

As regards the development of the border infrastructure, Volodymyr Omelyan stressed on the need to ensure Ukraine-EU joint supervision of the border crossing points.
