Ukraine will become an important participant in international transport corridors - Volodymyr Omelyan

Within the framework of the working visit to Ljubljana, Republic of Slovenia on April 27, 2018, Volodymyr Omelyan, the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine took part in the plenary session "Innovative Finance for Transport" and in the Transport Ministers Meeting of the Eastern Partnership countries.

During the visit, Volodymyr Omelyan also had bilateral meetings with Mr. Gavin Dunnett, the representative of the European Investment Bank and Mr Günter H. Oettinger, the European Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources. The sides discussed the progress of Ukraine's European integration in the infrastructure sphere, the expansion of direct connection between Ukraine and the EU and realization of transport projects, which supported by European partners, in particular the EIB.

Volodymyr Omelyan stressed on the importance of the implementation of joint infrastructure projects with the EIB: "I am glad that a number of projects that we started together with the EIB in road, maritime, railway sectors are already being successfully implemented. I hope that these projects are only the beginning of our cooperation, and in future a lot fruitful work wait for us".

The Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine also held a bilateral meeting with Violeta Bulc, the European Commissioner for Mobility and Transport. The sides discussed a wide range of issues, in particular, road safety projects, digitalization of transport, implementation of innovative technologies and cooperation with the EU in aviation sector.

Volodymyr Omelyan stressed that the Ministry of Infrastructure improves transport links between Ukraine and the EU in order to facilitate trade, investments, job creation and sustainable economic growth: «The Investment Action Plan will be important tool to modernize transport system in Ukraine. We hope that Quick Wings project will be realized in short-term perspective and will have crucial effect for the transport sector of Ukraine, as well as will solve bottlenecks problems.  It is planned electrification and modernization of rail tracks at the border of Poland and Hungary and also small projects of construction of some sections of highway and implementation of Intelligent Transport System for road sector".

The Minister also said that the Ministry of Infrastructure supports the development and implementation of concession projects in the seaports of Ukraine:  "These projects will allow attracting the private investors to the ports, increase volume of freight traffic and the competitiveness of 4 main ports. In addition, in the long-term period, we see as priority projects the electrification of the railway line to the Belarus border and the construction of high-speed railway connection in direction to EU from Lviv-Kyiv-Odessa. No less important for us is the development of regional airports. Now, we are developing a regional airport development initiative. This will increase the availability of air transport for the population of the country. There is planned to use a concession model to improve the equipment of airports".

Volodymyr Omelyan also emphasized that the Ministry of Infrastructure pays great attention to the development of Ukrainian roads and road safety in Ukraine:

"Since this year, the Road Fund has started to work in Ukraine, the law on the concession of highways has been adopted, the State Road Safety Program till 2020 has been approved, allocated a record amount of funds on the the reconstruction and construction of roads. This year we will see a new reality on Ukrainian highways. We are confident that these and other steps will allow Ukraine to become an important participant in the transport corridors with the EU ".
