Volodymyr Omelyan, the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine held bilateral meetings during his working visit to Switzerland

During a working visit to Geneva (Switzerland) on February 19, 2019, Volodymyr Omelyan, the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine, met with Cora Van Nieuwenhuizen, the Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The sides discussed issues of bilateral cooperation, the participation of Ukraine and Netherlands in the development of an integrated transport logistics system Europe-Asia and implementation of projects for the development of river transport in Ukraine.

Volodymyr Omelyan thanked the Netherlands for the successful implementation of the Dnipro River Development Initiative project and stressed that the priority tasks for the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine are the adoption of the law on inland waterways, the implementation of EU norms and standards, dredging and sustainable financing of river infrastructure. “Modernization of the river infrastructure, attraction of investments and implementation of the relevant EU directives will allow Ukraine to increase the volume of freight traffic, attract world investors to the development of inland waterways and strengthen the country's economy”, - the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine said.

Both sides noted that the implementation of joint initiatives and projects offers great opportunities for the modernization of Ukrainian infrastructure, the development of public-private partnerships, the introduction of best practices and advanced technologies.

During the working visit to Switzerland on February 19, 2019, Volodymyr Omelyan also met with Guangzhe Chen, the World Bank Senior Director and Michael B. CHRISTIDES, the BSEC PERMIS Secretary General.

During a meeting with Senior Director for the Transport Global Practice (GP), within the Infrastructure Vice-Presidency at the World Bank Group, Guangzhe Chen, the sides discussed the issue of financing joint projects with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Finance Corporation. Volodymyr Omelyan noted that with the assistance of the World Bank, a number of important initiatives and projects on improvement of road safety and development of public-private partnership in the maritime industry are being implemented. In particular, the introduction of a weigh system in the movement “Weight-in-Motion”, the preparation and implementation of pilot concession projects in the ports of Olvia, Kherson and Chornomorsk.  

During the meeting with Michael B. CHRISTIDES, the BSEC PERMIS Secretary General, Volodymyr Omelyan emphasized on the inadmissibility of Russia's aggressive actions in the Azov and Black Seas. He also stressed that ensuring of navigation safety and security, the development of ports and the creation of favorable conditions for sea transport is one of the priorities of Ukraine. Volodymyr Omelyan also informed that Ukraine is interested in the development of highways in the direction of Odesa (Ukraine) - Romania - Bulgaria - Greece / Turkey and the implementation of the project on the construction of the Black Sea ring highway.
