I believe in a 5-year period we will be able to reduce road traffic death rate at least to 30-40%, - Volodymyr Omelyan

The Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine has started the Road Safety Week. Yesterday there was the first meeting of the interagency working group on the development of security strategy of the Ukrainian roads. This was stated by Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Volodymyr Omelyan, during his opening speech at the International Round Table "International Rules and Standards in Transport security. Challenges and Best Practices” on November 15, 2016.

"We have started the Road Safety Week. Yesterday there was the first meeting of the interagency working group on the development of security strategy of the Ukrainian roads, co-chaired by me and I.Didenko, an Ukrainian MP, the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Road Traffic Security of Transport Parliamentary Committee. We have agreed to develop a range of effective measures to reduce road traffic death rate and to improve safety by installing crossings, lighting, bump-stops ", - Volodymyr Omelyan commented.

The Minister also noted that the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine with the support of the European Commission has launched a social media campaign, the purpose of which is to draw social attention to the problem of non—compliance with speed limits. 

"Perhaps the media campaign is not very pleasant, but in our opinion, it is absolutely effective. We want to bring Ukrainian citizens to discipline. We have to be responsible traffic participants. "- Volodymyr Omelyan said.

 “We are reconstructing and rebuilding Ukrainian roads this year. As the result we have not only increased the roads capacity but also the traffic speed of drivers. We must stop this practice. It is the cause of high injury and death rate. All countries in the world undergo it, and Ukraine is not the exception. We do not need to reinvent something new or unique, but use the European experience and practice. I believe that in a 5-year period we could reduce road traffic death rate at least to 30-40% ," - the Minister said.

V. Omelyan said, - that there is an agreement with the representatives of the ministries and departments, who are responsible for road safety, on their contemplated undergoing of the special traineeship in the EU. “We have agreed, that with the support of the European Commission, representatives of all ministries and departments, preliminary, the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Health, SSES, National Police will be undergoing special traineeships in Sweden, where they will have the opportunity to familiarized with the best practices and countermeasures that should be taken at the Government level in order to minimized the traffic death rate."

Yaroslav Dubnevich, a Ukrainian MP, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Transport Committee, stressed that the issue of road safety is very important, -“The today’s issue is very relevant and important. I hope that this week, on November 17, the Ukrainian Parliament will adopt a number of infrastructure related draft laws, which are very important, especially in part of security. "

Ihor Didenko, a Ukrainian MP noted, that increasing the safety of Ukrainian roads should be a key priority for all ministries and departments, which may contribute the improvement of the current situation. The problem requires a comprehensive solution. However, a range of effective measures can be taken in the nearest future.
